For example, full CRM software differs from basic contact management systems in that it enables you to assign prospective clients to sales staff, monitor progress and determine the results of marketing efforts.

Cloud on the Fly – VMworld 2011

Supporting Core Constituencies - Often lost in the noise around cloud is how these will affect core technology constituencies, particularly IT professionals and developers. In fact, controversies around the cloud's impact on IT staffing seem to be picking up steam, with some claiming that the shift to "lights out" data centers will decimate IT jobs. There are certainly historical precedents for this. Automation tends to fundamentally alter most every industry it touches. Both VMware and EMC are actively setting the stage for next-generation jobs with their initiatives for "data scientists" (who will specialize in business analytics and intelligence processes). Over time, look for those programs to expand. VMware's work in the developer community is also worth considering in this regard. The company's 2009 acquisition of SpringSource left many scratching their heads, but VMware's focus on supporting development of next-gen Web and enterprise apps soon became clear. By engaging with, making life easier for, and offering an expanding range of choices to young developers, VMware is cementing a position for itself at the leading edge of application evolution. The effort recalls IBM's support of Linux in the 1990s, a decision that has paid dividends for years and hobbled attempts by proprietary OS vendors to dominate the data center. ...

Successful CRM Champions Start Small, Think Big, Act Fast

I say that for a couple of reasons. First off, CRM still is viewed with a jaundiced eye by many decision makers. They may fully comprehend the importance of managing customer data and using it to gain and retain customers. They understand the value of creating a personalized customer experience. They value internal collaboration. They know how important it is for service staff to have customer data when and where they need it. They may even have a grip on software deployment models and the financial and IT effects they have on the business...

Troubleshooting the PMO

Let's consider this example: A client forms a PMO to salvage a huge contract with a customer. A very large project lags, causing late deliveries and missed expectations all around. Department staff is not completely honest with the customer, hoping that they will somehow be able to catch up. They fall further behind and an executive is forced to intervene. Experienced senior project managers are brought in to assist with the problem, turn around customer expectations, and evolve communication and estimation processes within three months. In another four months, the project managers turn the projects back over to a grateful department...

Yes, You Really CAN Compete With the Public Cloud Provider

So, all is not lost. The beleaguered CIO, aided by a competent and change-oriented staff, can develop the type of service deployment model used by external cloud providers, and can meet and even beat the external cloud provider in many areas of functional equivalence. In any event, every IT team is aware of the need for continuous improvement in both service levels and unit cost reductions. The cloud deployment model for the delivery of IT resources (internally) is an opportunity to make huge strides in each of these two key corporate focus are...
