HP announced Monday a new round of open source utilities for data center operators. The expanded portfolio increases support for HP Serviceguard for Linux, HP’s clustering and disaster tolerance products, to include Novell Suse and Red Hat Xen virtual machines.
HP also introduced its HP Strategy Workshop and Migration Assessment Services. These offerings help to deploy and support OpenLDAP (lightweight directory access protocol), an open source directory.
“We are trying to make Linux more suitable and productive for the enterprise market,” Doug Small, worldwide director of open source and Linux marketing for HP, told LinuxInsider. “We are seeing customers willing to move their use of Linux to the core of their organization.”
Disaster Tolerance
HP Serviceguard for Linux is designed to protect applications from downtime associated with upgrades, maintenance and software or hardware failures. It also protects against complete site outages by offering constant monitoring and an automatic response system that can transfer applications to an available physical or virtual server in case of system failure.
The expanded support positions HP to extend its Unix high-availability clustering and disaster tolerance expertise to customers running a Linux environment. Building on its support for VMware virtual machines, customers running Novell Suse Linux and Red Hat Xen virtual machines can nowreceive the same level of data protection for their Xen virtual machines as they do for their physical machines.
Directory Services
Available initially in the United States, Canada and parts of Latin America, HP Strategy Workshop and Migration Assessment Services will help customers implement an OpenLDAP directory and jump-start directory service migration. Customers can create a single, authoritative directory and more effective policies and audit procedures for easier compliance, said Small.
HP’s consulting service assesses whether an organization’s current technology environment can benefit from an OpenLDAP migration and, if so, creates a long-term strategy for it. HP pinpoints where an OpenLDAP-based directory service should reside in order to maximize modularity and flexibility.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing for HP Serviceguard for Linux is US$1,928 per server and $1,989 per core for for integrity servers.
“This enables complete Xen support,” said Small.
Pricing for the expanded Linux support services is based on customer design.
